On 11/15/2022, House Republicans voted 188-31 to formally nominate Kevin McCarthy to serve as speaker in the next Congress, but the opposition shows the work he’ll have to do before a floor election in January, when he’ll likely need 218 votes. California Rep. Kevin McCarthy fought off a challenge by Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs and is on track to become the next speaker. McCarthy and the newly elected GOP leadership team held a news conference.
Following the Republican conference elections, Elise Stefanik the newly-elected leadership team members delivered remarks to preview House Republicans’ plan to fulfill the Commitment to America in the 118th Congress. Elise Stefanik is going to serve a second term as the House Republican Conference Chairwoman. She said, “I’m honored to earn support from my colleagues to continue serving as House Republican Conference Chair. We won this majority because of our Commitment to America, and we are the last line of defense in a House Republican majority to stand up for the American people. I particularly am proud being from the state of New York—we picked up four seats in New York State, flipping blue districts to red, and we will have a tremendous Republican Conference in the 118th Congress.”
Tom Emmer won out over his colleagues on the second ballot count, securing the job that will be crucial in what is likely to be a razor-thin Republican majority, ""We will be the only check on the Biden administration and a Democrat-controlled Senate over the next 2 years.” House GOP conference chose him as majority whip in leadership election. Emmer won the No. 3 position on the third ballot in a closed-door House GOP meeting, defeating U.S. Reps. Jim Banks of Indiana and Drew Ferguson of Georgia. “We’re excited to get to work. We’re excited to be back in the majority.”
Louisiana’s Steve Scalise, House GOP whip since 2014, will become Republican leader, following an uncontested campaign for the No. 2 role. He said, “On an agenda that’s focused on lowering inflation and reducing energy cost, securing American border … ” said Scalise.
Congressman Mike Johnson will keep his current position as vice-chair of the Republican caucus. When ask what it means for the state Johnson says it gives Louisiana more of a voice on steering committees and committee chair appointments. “Louisiana’s interest will be front and center and top of the line for us every single day of course. And when we advance those values and priorities it’s good for the whole country,” said Johnson
North Carolina Rep. Richard Hudson became chair of House Republicans’ campaign arm, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC). His election was uncontested.
The conference reelected Alabama Rep. Gary Palmer to chair the Republican Policy Committee. Michigan Rep. Lisa McClain, who is just finishing her first term, was elected to serve as conference secretary.
